Beautifully Polished And Shaped
Caymanite – A National Treasure.
CAYMANITE ROCK is found hidden away under the jagged limestone crust of Grand Cayman’s East End and the craggy cliffs of Cayman Brac. This beautifully coloured rock is only found in the Cayman Islands.
CAYMANITE has layers of colours, created by the different minerals contents of each strata and laid down millions of years ago. Iron produces shades or red, manganese forms black layers, and nickle, titanium and copper influence other subtle colours. It is classified as a dolomite and is very hard.
Caymanite is similar to manganese found on some deep ocean floors.
Caymanians have a long tradition of carving and creating jewellery and works of art of Caymanite, though it takes great skill, strong tools and patience to craft and polish it.
